2019 Face-to-Face Meeting

While many objectives of the Network can be achieved with the WEB site and mailing list, nothing can really replace a Face-to-Face meeting to help generate understanding, camaradarie, and encourage sharing.  The Malawi Mission Network was first formed at a Face-to-Face meeting in August, 2003 near Louisville, KY.  We had approximately 30 people at the meeting and we shared what we were all doing and were gladdened to see how much we all had in common but also how much we could learn from each other. Everyone felt this was an extremely valuable opportunity and they wanted to do it again.  Since then the meetings have been growing and improving every year.

As valuable and interesting as the formal presentations are, probably the most valuable part of the Meeting is the chance to meet and network with others with the same interests as you, and likely very different experiences you can both learn from.

We  have lined up an exciting program for this conference.   Our Keynote speaker is Rev. Alex Benson Maulana, the General Secretary of the Blantyre Synod.

Begin planning now to join us for our next meeting. Registration Form (or Download a MS Word based Registration Form Here)  Reserve these dates and submit your registration now..

See our tentative Agenda to see the exciting programs we have planned. We will have several  presentations on congregations working with partners and on education and updates on the current Malawi political situation plus reports from several of our mission co-workers.

You may wish to bring other family members that will not be attending the program (spouse and children) and they may stay in the Center without attending the program - the costs would be that shown above minus $75.  Please contact the coordinator (Jim Nussbaumer) about the rates. For info about what you or the other family members can do in the area, check out the Travel Page.

You may also wish to come a day or two early or stay a day or two after the conference to take advantage of the wonderful Colorado mountains in the summer time.  Contact the coordinator (Jim Nussbaumer) for rates on that.  There is no guarantee if meals will be served in the Retreat Center if there are not enough people staying there, but there are many places to eat in the surrounding areas.

Housing Options:
Because there is another small group meeting at Highlands at the same time we are, we do not have all of the rooms in the Retreat Center.  We have 14 rooms which can hold up to 4 per room.  We also have 2 very modern, attractive cabins, Black Bear and Antelope which can sleep up to 20 per cabin. These are arranged with 2 sleeping rooms per cabin so they would be gender specific rooms rather than family rooms.  These are very comfortable cabins - only a 5 minute walk from the main Retreat Center.  As you can see on the registration form, they are less expensive than staying in the Retreat Center.

On the registration form, you can select your preferred room choice.  However, because of the limited Retreat Center rooms, I hope you will be flexible in your room options.  If you are agreeable, I will try to find roommates to put together in the Retreat Center rooms.  If you ask for a Retreat Center room and one is not available, I will ask to assign you to a cabin.

Altitude:
Highlands Camp is in the Rocky Mountains at an altitude of over 8200 ft above sea level.  While most people can visit at this altitude and experience no problems - unless they undertake serious physical exertion, other people can experience health problems at this altitude.  They may feel light-headed or even get sick.  Often this is because they are not drinking enough water.  For some people, even staying properly hydrated is not enough.   If you know you have had altitude problems before at this altitude, you may want to consider some adjustments.  One option is to come to Colorado a few days earlier and stay in the lower regions such as Denver which is around 5,000 ft.  Another option is to choose to attend the conference at Highlands during the day but drive down to a lower altitude (5,000 ft) in Longmont to sleep at night in a motel.  This can help many people.  To my knowledge we have only had one person with serious altitude issues in the past when we have met at Highlands, but we want to make everyone conscious of this issue.

Travel:
Highlands Presbyterian Camp and Retreat Center is located in the mountains of Colorado, about one and a half hours north west of Denver. It is about 30 minutes south of the resort town of Estes Park and only 10 minutes from Rocky Mountain National Park.  It is located at an altitude of about 8250 ft. If you fly in, Denver International Airport (DIA) is less than one and a half hours away.  We are not providing shuttle service ourselves - BUT there is a shuttle service from the airport to Highlands offered by Estes Park Shuttle. They run a regular shuttle every 3 hours at their normal rate of $85 per person round trip.  If we get enough people wanting to use them, we can arrange a lower rate.
