SPEAKERS:
Rev. Davidson ChifungoRev. Davidson Chifungo is the General
Secretary of the CCAP Nkhoma Synod. Rev. Chifungo grew up in a small village near
Nkhoma. He was educated at the Africa Bible College in Lilongwe where he graduated
in 1997. He and his wife, Phoebe, entered the mission field by serving in rural
Mozambique for seven years among people who had been refugees in Malawi during the
Mozambique civil wars. |
In 2000, he was ordained by the CCAP in Malawi but continued to serve in
Mozambique. In 2004, he left Mozambique to be part of a Christian Organization
called Veritas College where he served as a program manager. His main task was to
train lay leaders for Bible interpretation, application and communication. This is
an international, interdenominational organization, specializing in "Integrated
Leadership Development". Rev. Chifungo was elected to the position of
General Secretary of Nkhoma Synod in 2007 where he leads the ministry of CCAP in central
Malawi.
Davidson and Phoebe have three daughters: Thoko 11, Thandi 6 and Temwa 4.
The has continued his education and has been awarded the Masters of Theology from
Stellenbosch in South Africa where he and his wife are both currently studying toward
their doctorate degrees. |
Rev. Vasco Kachipapa
|
Rev. Vasco Kachipapa is a pastor of CCAP, NKhoma Synod. He is
currently serving a church in the city of Lilongwe, M'buka Congregation and is also
serving as the moderator of the Nkhoma Synod for the second term. He is married to
Madalitso and they have three children, two girls and a boy. He is also serving on
the Malawi Board of Directors for Ministry of Hope. |
Paul
Sigmund
Paul Sigmund leads project activities for a group sponsored
by Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church in New Jersey, and will be making his 4rd
trip to Malawi, Africa this September.>
After graduating as a Chemical Engineer with degrees from Lehigh University and the
University of Michigan, Paul spent 25 years working for Union Carbide Corporation,
leading process technology development employed in oil refineries and natural gas plants.
He is currently restoring a 200 year old farmhouse and barn, enjoys photography,
rebuilds antique tractors. |
Working in partnership with Ministry of Hope (MOH) Paul has built
swingsets for the kids, and a gravity based irrigation system to facilitate creation of a
feeding center vegetable garden, in remote Malawian villages. Last year he initiated
the Light-a-Village program, which seeks to bring light to villagers via
battery operated lanterns charged in central solar facilities, and returns this year to
expand that program. Paul has also been investigating techniques to address the
rapidly declining soil fertility devastating Malawi and finally, would love to
initiate a biodiesel production venture with MOH. |
Doug Roszel
Doug retired in 2007 after 35 years as an Information Technology professional and
consultant. Doug and his wife Flora Mae are members of First Presbyterian Church in
Bartlesville, Oklahoma. They both currently serve as members of the churchs Mission
Committee. Doug and Flora Mae have a son, Loren; a daughter, Larissa; and four
grandchildren, Brooke, Haley, Noah and Jenna. |
Dougs passion has always been to help those in need through a
variety of mission programs and activities including Habitat for Humanity. Doug became
involved with both the Living Waters for the World and Solar Under the Sun mission
ministries in 2010 when he attended training for each program. He has made three trips to
Haiti to complete numerous site surveys and assessments and to install solar-powered water
treatment systems. Doug is an instructor for the Solar Under the Sun training at Ferncliff
Camp outside Little Rock, Arkansas and the Living Waters for the World training at
Hopewell Camp and Conference Center near Oxford, Mississippi. He is currently on the board
of directors for Solar Under the Sun. |
Nancy Collins
Nancy Collins was appointed regional liaison for East Africa in June 2009.
Previously, she served in Cairo, Egypt, from January 1998 until January 2009.

In her new role, Nancy facilitates PC(USA) relationships with partner
churches and institutions in Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda and Zambia. She also provides support
for PC(USA) mission personnel and is a resource for U.S. congregations who are in a
relationship with one of our partners in the region. Nancys special focus is on the
evangelism, leadership development and church-growth work of PC(USA) partners in those
countries. |
Rev. Catherine (Kay) Day
Kay was appointed as a PC(USA) mission co-worker in July 2009 and serves
in Malawi at the invitation of the Blantyre Synod of the Church of Central Africa
Presbyterian (CCAP).
She is the synod chaplain, a companion and minister to fellow ministers who each serve
(due to a severe clergy shortage) an average of four congregations. She also prepares
continuing education opportunities for ministers in the synod. In addition, Kay is the
administrator of the Chigodi
Womens Centre and serves as facilitator for the Blantyre Synod partnership with
the PC(USA)s Pittsburgh Presbytery.

Kay has been involved with Malawi since 1995. She started as a host for
visitors from Malawi in Pittsburgh, then became the chair of the partnership committee
with Malawi and made three short-term mission trips there. In 2007 Kay spent a year in
Malawi, teaching at Zomba Theological College where she was able to model pastoral care
for the seminary students. She also served as a facilitator for visitors to Malawi from
Canada and the United States.
Kay holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Geneva College in Beaver Falls,
Pennsylvania, a Master of Divinity from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and a
masters in English from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh. |
Dr. Martha Sommers
Martha
Sommers is a family physician at Ekwendeni Hospital in Malawi. She is under
appointment to minister with the Synod of Livingstonia. She has been under appointment
since 1997; first as a mission volunteer, and then a PC(USA) mission co-worker.
Martha is one of two long-term doctors at Ekwendeni Hospital, which is known for
their community health work, success in emergency triage and treatment of children under
five, being a Baby-Friendly
hospital, and being the main clinical site for the Synod's College of Health Sciences. |
Martha worked as a long-term volunteer for the PC(USA) in Embangweni from
1997 to 2000 and as a mission co-worker at Embangweni and Ekwendeni from 2001 to present.
Ive grown so much by journeying with Malawian friends, says Martha,
:and thank God for how they have picked me up when I have tripped, made sure I was
not alone with illness, and taught me to enter into grief and grab joy.
Martha received a bachelors degree in microbiology with a minor in theology from the
University of Notre Dame in Indiana in 1986. She earned her medical degree from the
University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1990 and followed this with family practice residency
at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. |
Mark Koenig
The Rev. Mark Koenig is the director of Presbyterian ministry at the United
Nations. He has over 30 years of experience in minisry, serving congregation, the
Presbytery of the Western Reserve and the General Assembly Mission Council. He was
on the staff of the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program and was its coordinator from 2007 to
2010.

Richard
Keller
Richard Keller is a veteran sales manager with over 35 years experience in the solar PV
industry, 21 years as the Solarex/BP Solar Regional Manager in Colorado and the last
11 years as a Senior Account Executive for Ameresco Solar, one of North America's largest
wholesale solar component distributors. |
His experience includes PV system design, installation, project logistics,
sales, service and training. Mr. Keller has been a member and former director of the
Colorado Solar Energy Industry Association since its formation in 1985 and is also a
member of both the American Solar Energy Society and Colorado Renewable Energy
Society. He has been to Malawi six times, each trip bringing some solar systems
components for local applications with a partner congregation there. |
